If you’ve been charged with a drink driving or drug offence, then you may be able to make an application for a work licence.

Work licences are restricted drivers licences which can be issued in certain circumstances to people who would otherwise be unable to drive due to disqualification of their driver’s licence.

To apply for a restricted work licence, there are a number of factors that will impact your application, including:

• The level of blood alcohol concentration at the time of the offence
• If you require your licence in order to retain current employment
• If the failure to grant a restricted licence would cause extreme hardship to you or your family by depriving you of your means of earning a living

To make an application for a work licence you must do so before your existing licence is formally disqualified. Once a court rules on your current licence, you cannot then seek to apply for a work licence.
